Preserving and protecting the lives and property of our residents

Development Services is responsible for assisting our customers in understanding and complying with the Building and Rehabilitation Code, Zoning Ordinance, Fences and Walls Ordinance, Floodplain Management Ordinance, Parking Station Ordinance, Travel Trailers and Mobile Homes Ordinance, Aviation Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance and other ordinances related to the development process in Kansas City, Mo. Development Services is organized into six divisions to better serve you: Business Services, Inspections, Investigations, Permits, Plans Review and Land Development, and has 157 full-time associates who strive to conduct themselves in accordance with our Canons of Ethics. Development Services also provides staff support to the Building and Fire Codes Board of Appeals and has an associate who is a member of the Missouri Elevator Safety Board.

Also, access a KIVANET report that provides an up-to-date list of outstanding correction items from all inspections performed on a permit. Permit type and number are required to run the report:

- Residential building contractor licensing - Since Nov. 1, 2004, any contractor obtaining building permits for regulated work on one- and two-family dwellings, townhouses and detached accessory buildings greater than 400 square feet in area have been required to hold a residential building contractors license. All residential building contractors shall have a qualified residential building supervisor in place in order to operate as such. An individual holding a residential building certification must complete 32 hours of continuing education over a four year renewal period to maintain his/her certification. Each certificate and license is good for four years from the date of issuance and must be renewed quadrennially thereafter. A renewal notice will be mailed one month prior to the expiration date of the certificate or license. For more information, see contractor licensing information
- Residential Deck Construction Guidelines - Published by the Johnson County Contractor Licensing Program. Please be advised that this document contains information on suggested best practices that may exceed the minimum requirements of the Kansas City Building and Rehabilitation Code. Also note that Development Services requires a site plan, but not deck plans, to obtain a permit.
