FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Nov. 27, 2012
Line Creek Trail construction progressing
Trail access from Line Creek Community Center temporarily closed
The City of Kansas City, Mo., is advising residents that access to the Line Creek Trail from the Line Creek Community Center in Frank Vaydik Park will be closed beginning today, Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 and will reopen, weather permitting, by Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. During this closure, the Line Creek Trail will remain open and can still be accessed from a trailhead at the intersection of North Gower Drive and Northwest Waukomis Drive (3313 N.W. 68th St.) or at the end of Northwest Platte Brooke Drive (3712 N.W. Platte Brooke Drive).
The existing low water crossing in Vaydik Park will be replaced with an engineered structure that will be lower in the creek channel and will have more capacity to handle water flow and sloped edges to reduce clogging. As part of the replacement, portions of the Line Creek stream bank will be restored.
The replacement of the low water crossing is the second of three phases to complete the trail from the Line Creek Community Center to Vivion Road in Riverside. The first phase, which is almost complete, added one mile of trail between I-29 and the Community Center. The third phase of the project will begin in the spring and will complete the Line Creek Trail from I-29 to US 69/Vivion Road Bridge over Line Creek.
This is a joint project funded by the Cities of Riverside and Kansas City through their capital improvement programs and Platte County’s ½ cent sales tax dedicated for parks and storm water improvements. The total estimated project cost of the extension is $1.9 million. When complete, the Line Creek Trail will be more than four miles from Vivion Road to Northwest Platte Brooke Drive.
