FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 15, 2009
Red-light Safety Camera Program expands
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department today announced that June 1, is the target date for activating red-light safety cameras at the intersections of North Oak Trafficway and Vivion Road, N.W. 68th Street and U.S. 169 highway, 23rd Street and I-435, and Winner Road and I-435. These activations will bring the total number of active red-light safety camera intersections to 13.
Prior to inclusion in the safety program, intersections are evaluated by a registered traffic engineer to make certain they meet or exceed the Federal Highway Administration’s recommended countermeasures for reducing red-light running. Only after all recommended countermeasures are in place will the City consider activating an intersection as part of the Red-Light Safety Camera Program.
As additional intersections are added to the Red-Light Safety Camera Program, the public will be notified prior to each intersection activation. Active Red-Light Safety Camera locations are listed at www.kcmo.org/pubworks.
Red-light camera systems have proven effective in reducing the incidence of red-light running. Across the nation, more than 200 cities use photo enforcement technology as a traffic safety tool.
The City contracts with American Traffic Solutions Inc., to administer its Red-light Safety Camera Program. The company serves more than 130 communities across the U.S. with photo enforcement programs and is the largest provider of red-light camera systems in Missouri.
