FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 10, 2009

Community Leadership Program starts March 24

Free training offered in five topics over five-week spans

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Neighborhood and Community Services Department is partnering with the Mid-America Regional Council to provide comprehensive leadership training through the new Community Leadership Program. The first class begins March 24.

This free program will include classes on personal strengths, facilitation skills, problem solving, relationship building and community building. Each of these topics will be the focus of its own five-week class, for which participants can earn a certificate of completion. Participants who complete the entire series of five classes will be eligible to graduate from the program and receive a certificate recognizing their completion of the program.

"Residents who have been through leadership training in the past will find that the Community Leadership Program builds upon their existing leadership skills, develops new ones and provides a course of action of how to use those skills in the community," said Deletta Dean, manager of the Neighborhood Services Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department. Dean and her staff were instrumental in the development of the program.

The Community Leadership Program is designed for Kansas City, Mo., residents who can better serve their community organizations by improving their leadership skills. Each class will be offered north of the river, in the midtown area and in the south part of the city.

Visit http://www.marc.org/CLP/ or call Beverly Wilson with the Mid-America Regional Council at (816) 701-8216 for more information about the Community Leadership Program, its instructors and registration options. Registration can be completed online and will be accepted as long as the class is not at capacity. Classes meet weekly from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Media inquiries about the Neighborhood and Community Services Department should be directed to Teresa L. Clark, public information officer for the Neighborhood and Community Services Department, (816) 513-3247.
