City partners with non-profits to open 3 community engagement centers
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Neighborhood Services Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department, in collaboration with local non-profit organizations, opened three new community engagement centers on Nov. 1. The new centers are located at the following: the Vineyard Neighborhood Association, 4301 E. 43rd St.; the Palestine Senior Activity Center, 3325 Prospect Ave.; and the Community Assistance Council, 10901 Blue Ridge Blvd.
Community engagement centers work with neighborhood leaders to streamline neighborhood revitalization efforts. Each center houses a property maintenance code enforcement officer and an animal health inspector and offers an array of programming and human services tailored to address the needs of residents in its targeted neighborhood area. Services provided include utility assistance, a food pantry, computer labs, dedicated computers for employment searching, and full-time Local Investment Commission (LINC) staff to help residents and neighborhood leaders improve quality of life.
“Organizations like the Vineyard Neighborhood Association and the Community Assistance Council are already serving the community in various capacities,” said Deletta Dean, Neighborhood Services Division manager. “Our partnership with organizations like these affords us the opportunity to leverage City resources to further enhance the organizations’ ability to improve the livability of neighborhoods and meet the needs of residents.”
The community engagement centers are funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program.
These three new centers will complement two existing community engagement centers. The City’s Neighborhood Services Department partnered with LINC in 2008 to establish the Palestine Neighborhood Engagement Center, 3449 Indiana Ave., and the Southeast Caring Community Engagement Center, 5931 Swope Parkway (Covenant Presbyterian Church).
