FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 10, 2006

Recycling for a Better Tomorrow event is Oct. 14

Free food and bottled water, and discounted trash tags* (maximum of 50 free tags) will be available at a special KC Recycles event sponsored by Westlake Ace Hardware.

The Recycling for a Better Tomorrow event is Oct. 14 from noon until 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Westlake Ace Hardware store at 1000 Westport Road.

The trash tags will be available on a buy one/get one free basis; the tags are required if Kansas City, Mo., residents put out more than two bags of trash for their weekly curbside pick-up.

"Recycling provides a simple and yet significant way for each of us to help make tomorrow a better place. This event and events like it are really important for getting the recycling message out," said Stan Harris, director of the Public Works Department.

There will be a moonwalk for kids; information about recycling and environmental programs; and prize giveaways of items provided by the Parks and Recreation Department, Convention and Entertainment Centers Department and Global Spectrum. At 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., there will be demonstrations about how to construct a rain barrel, which is a conservation tool that harvests rain water so it can be used to water gardens and lawns. Rain barrels also help reduce flooding. Residents who attend the Recycling for a Better Tomorrow event will have a chance to register to win a rain barrel system.

"Westlake's long history – over 100 years as a company and over 30 years in the Kansas City area – makes us appreciate the value of taking care of our friends, our neighbors and our neighborhoods. This event gives our neighbors a place to come to have fun, meet their friends, and gather useful information," said Kevin Pfeifer, director of advertising for Westlake Ace Hardware.

From January through August of 2006, curbside recycling through KC Recycles saved 25 million pounds of material from going to waste. In aluminum alone, the recycling of cans saved enough energy to run a television for 907,000 days. Through the recycling of paper and cardboard, residents saved 193,000 trees, 102,000 barrels of oil, and enough electricity to run 5,100 homes for a year.
