City’s Combined Charities Campaign starts Sept. 18
The City launches its 2003 Combined Charities Campaign, “Lend a Hand, Touch a Heart,” Sept. 18, from 9:45-11:45 a.m., with a kick-off event at Ilus W. Davis Park. Department directors, other City employees and “mystery” celebrity guests will entertain the crowd. Representatives from local charitable organizations also will be present to educate City employees about participating charities and how contributions will be used.
The kick-off will feature key speakers including Mayor Kay Barnes, City Manager Wayne Cauthen, City Council members, department directors and union representatives. The co-chairmen for this year’s campaign are Les Washington, Director of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department; and Mickey Dean, Acting Director of the Human Relations Department. The co-coordinators for these departments are Renea Nash and Tracey Franklin, respectively.
This kick-off event encourages participation from City employees and starts five weeks of donating time for City employees. An awards ceremony is held in December. The City’s goal for the 2003 charity campaign is $450,000. Last year, City employees raised $523,716, a 4 percent increase over 2001 donations. Last year, more than 2,280 employees donated to the campaign, with approximately 680 of those employees pledging in amounts that qualified as special recognition levels.
