Kansas City reports third heat death of 2003
Heat has been declared a factor in the death of another Kansas City, Mo., resident.
The third victim, who lived in the 700 block of E. 10th Street, was discovered after neighbors complained of a smell coming from the apartment. The victim was a 69-year-old white male with an unknown medical history. He was last seen Aug. 24 at 2 pm. His home did not have an air conditioner, but one window was open. The temperature inside the house was 98 degrees.
Community involvement is vital to preventing additional heat-related deaths. The community is encouraged to take an active role in looking out for each other. If your neighbor must leave his home to take refuge from the heat, volunteer to watch his property in his absence. People often are afraid to leave home because of the threat of being burglarized.
