Major construction wraps up on Northwest Barry Road

Community members, elected officials and staff from Kansas City, Mo., and Platte County gathered yesterday to celebrate the completion of the final stages of the Northwest Barry Road improvement project.

The group gathered in sight of the Barry Road Bridge over Rush Creek, one of the major improvements undertaken during the project’s third phase. Recent construction improved Northwest Barry Road between Northwest Potomac Avenue and North Conant Avenue, and North Amity Avenue from Northwest Barry Road to Missouri Highway 152. Work included extensive roadway widening, sight line improvement and stormwater control. In addition, sidewalks, bicycle lanes and added green space helped update a major roadway in need of major improvements.

“About 150 years ago, this was the military highway between Liberty and Fort Leavenworth,” said Councilman Russ Johnson. “People talk about us bringing new roads to the Northland. This isn’t a new road, it’s an old one that needed an overhaul to meet the needs of drivers.”

The City’s Public Works Department managed design and construction of the project in conjunction with Platte County’s Public Works Department, which performed a similar improvement on Barry Road between North Chariton Avenue and North Conant Avenue.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Public Works Department, at 816-513-0059 or email sean.demory@kcmo.org.
