Municipal Court offers new court services online
Presiding Judge Katherine Bromfield Emke announces that the Kansas City, Mo., Municipal Court’s Web page – located at www.kcmo.org/court – has been upgraded to include new technology that allows residents and attorneys to request a first-time continuance and to review warrant information.
“To our knowledge, we are the first court in the United States to offer online continuances,” said Vanessa Williams, court services manager.
The online processes were designed to be as user-friendly as possible, noted Williams. When a resident logs in and provides his/her ticket number and last name, the system assigns the arresting officer’s next available court date to the case. The resident can choose to accept that date or keep the original date. If a new court date is selected, the Web page changes the docket accordingly in real time.
Residents may make only one continuance per case online. If an additional continuance is desired, the resident must come to the court. Cases involving accidents or domestic violence cases or those that involve either witnesses or victims are excluded from the new online continuance process.
Another new feature permits attorneys and/or residents to use the court’s Web page to immediately learn whether a ticket is in warrant status by simply entering the person’s last name and the ticket number.
“It took a lot of people and programming hours to make these new online services happen,” Williams added. “Citizens will no longer have to call 3-1-1 or the court to obtain warrant information or to continue their case.”
