FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 24, 2012

City’s Civil Rights Division airs 12-week radio show series on discrimination

The Civil Rights Division of Kansas City, Mo.’s Human Relations Department will launch a new 30-minute radio show to be aired on KPRT 1590 AM. The show, called “Discrimination – Report It, Don’t Ignore It,” will begin airing on Saturday, July 28 and will run for twelve weeks. The show will air at 11 a.m. each Saturday.

The Civil Rights Division enforces the City’s anti-discrimination ordinance, which prohibits discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations based on a person’s race, national origin, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, familial status (housing), marital status (housing) and age (employment).

“Each show will focus on a different area of discrimination,” said Mickey Dean, assistant to the director for Human Relations. “Most people are familiar with some areas of civil rights law such as race and sex discrimination. Many people are not as familiar with the laws of discrimination as they pertain to disability, renting to families with children or mortgage lending.”

The show is designed to inform residents of their rights under the law, and what to do if they believe that they are victims of discrimination. It is part of the Civil Rights Division’s “Report It, Don’t Ignore It” outreach campaign, which will feature radio and newspaper ads, billboards, posters and other forms of communication.

The show is underwritten by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. For more information, contact the Civil Rights Division at 816-513-1836.
