I-470 ramp collapse impact on 87th Street project
In an effort to accommodate the rerouting of traffic after the recent collapse of a ramp on Interstate 470 near the Three Trails Crossing, the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s Capital Project Office, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, has closed a portion of 87th Street. Motorists traveling southbound on I-435 exiting onto 87th Street will be rerouted to northbound I-435. Motorists will not be able to travel east or west on 87th Street from this location.
This closure has not had an impact on construction work taking place on the north side of 87th Street, which is slated for completion in September. However, future construction sequencing for the City’s 87th Street construction project may be delayed on the south side of 87th Street due to the MoDOT traffic detour.
The construction currently underway on this section of 87th Street, which began in June 2009, is part of an $11 million roadway improvement. This project will realign and widen 87th Street east of Highway 71, adding sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers and other improvements to the roadway. In addition, roundabouts will be installed at both Interstate 435 intersections, Hillcrest Road and Newton Avenue.
“We are currently working with the contractor and MoDOT to allow the continuation of 87th Street construction and provide the needed detour space during repairs on I-470,” said Pat Klein, acting Capital Projects Office manager. “We will continue to coordinate with MoDOT to assist in any ways needed to complete their repairs of I-470, and allow our project to return to full construction.”
Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this closure or the 87th Street construction project should be directed to Sean Demory, communications manager for the Capital Projects Office, 816-513-0059.
