City receives superior rating in performance management

Everything’s up to date in Kansas City, says the song,

and that includes data-driven results

The City of Kansas City, Mo., has received the highest level of recognition for superior performance management efforts from the International City/County Management Association.

For the second year in a row, the association awarded Kansas City, Mo., with a Certificate of Excellence from the ICMA Center for Performance Management. Only 27 other communities received the same highest level of recognition this year.

“Kansas City is in the forefront when it comes to the use of data-driven results,” said City Manager Troy Schulte. “While we take pride in this Certificate of Excellence, its lasting value will be that it inspires us to use data to drive innovation, effective services and communication, improving the quality of life for residents.”

The ICMA Center assesses a local government by gauging performance over time and comparing results to peer communities. Performance management helps reduce costs, prioritize programs, improve community engagement, and encourage accountability and transparency.

Certificates are awarded at the levels of Achievement, Distinction and Excellence. Criteria for the Certificate of Excellence include:

• Reporting performance data to the public through budgets, newsletters and/or information for elected officials

• Verifying data to ensure reliability

• Training staff

• Using performance data in strategic planning and operational decision-making

• Sharing performance measurement knowledge with other local governments through presentations, site visits and other networking

• Correlating data to key public outcomes

• Surveying both residents and local government employees

• Reporting results in a timely and effective way

About ICMA

ICMA provides member support; publications, data and information; peer and results-oriented assistance; and training and professional development to nearly 9,000 city, town and county experts and other individuals and organizations throughout the world.
