Bright Future interns give back and explore the arts

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Bright Future Employment Program interns will serve the community on Friday, July 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at Gregg Klice Community Center as they prepare more than 3,000 backpacks for the City’s Community Back to School Rally.

More than 100 interns will package school supplies, uniforms and backpacks for students throughout theKansas City area. Following the service project, interns will tour the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts as part of their leadership series. The series consisted of three leadership sessions during the internship program. The sessions including presentations, business tours and strategies from Mayor Sly James; City Manager Troy Schulte; Chris Hernandez, Senior Vice President of UMB Bank; Mike Chesser of KCPL; Alex Wendel of Global Prairie; Crispin Rea of Mattie Rhodes Center; and executives of the Greater Kansas City Chamber.

“Touring a world class venue such as the Kauffman Performing Arts Center will be an experience our interns will never forget,” said Thalia Cherry, director of the Office of Civic and Community Engagement.

The Bright Future Employment Program provides Kansas City, Mo., residents employment opportunities, along with leadership and professional development. The program has been in existence for the past seven years.

“This investment will surely impact our ability to create a stronger workforce”, said Fifth District Councilman Michael Brooks.
