Homes from the Heartland Gala is June 17

The City of Kansas City, Mo., and Habitat for Humanity Kansas City are sponsoring the Homes from the Heartland Gala on June 17 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel.

Homes from the Heartland was established to support Operation Home Delivery, which is the hurricane recovery program for Habitat for Humanity. This program is providing home building assistance to Gulf Coast hurricane victims through Habitat affiliates in the gulf region.

David Naster, nationally renowned comedian, is the master of ceremonies. The gala will begin at 6 p.m. with a silent auction and social hour. The McFadden Brothers will perform and the event will conclude with a dance. Tickets cost $125 and tables of 10 can be reserved for $1,000.

The nationwide Operation Home Delivery program enlists volunteers in cities across the country to pre-build housing components, package them in containers and ship them to the Gulf Coast to be permanently set up.

Details of Homes from the Heartland were announced in March at a news conference and kick-off event at City Hall. In one week, teams of volunteers from the City, other government agencies, corporations and organizations will build 10 "homes in a box" to be shipped to families in Louisiana. The building event will be held June 17-23 on the north side of the Liberty Memorial.

The event at the Liberty Memorial also will include activities for families including entertainment, food vendors and hands-on activities, such as a construction-themed arts and crafts tent for children.

In addition to the partnership with the City, other sponsors of the project include American Century Investments, H&R Block, Missouri Housing Development Commission, National Association of the Remodeling Industry (Kansas City), NovaStar, and Timberland Company in partnership with SkillsUSA.
