FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 24, 2011

Residents advised about wastewater overflow into Second Creek Watershed

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department reports a wastewater overflow due to a malfunctioning private sewer line.

An overflowing manhole was located at 9701 N. Shannon Dr. at 2:09 p.m. on Monday, May 23. It was overflowing approximately one-half gallon per minute. The sewage entered a storm water catch basin leading to a storm drainage ditch.

The sewer overflow ended at 3:35 p.m. for an approximate total of 42 gallons.

The release of untreated sewage from sewer systems, such as this, is known as a sanitary sewer overflow and represents a potential threat to public health and the environment. Most of the overflows occur during wet weather events. However, in this instance, the overflow occurred during a dry weather event due to malfunctioning private force main.

For more information, contact Colleen Doctorian, public information officer for the Water Services Department, at 816-513-0232.
