12th Street Bridge temporarily closed

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department is alerting motorists that the 12th Street Bridge will be temporarily closed. The decision to close the bridge was made after a routine inspection revealed structural deficiencies. The temporary closure will last until repairs are made later this summer.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured as follows:

Westbound
-South on I-35 to 20th Street
-West on 20th Street to Summit Street
-South on Summit Street to Cesar E. Chavez Avenida (23rd Street Trafficway)
-West on Cesar E. Chavez Avenida to American Royal Drive
-American Royal Drive to Wyoming Street
-North on Wyoming Street back to 12th Street

Eastbound
-South on Genessee Street to 17th Street
-East on 17th Street to American Royal Drive
-South on American Royal Drive to Cesar E. Chavez Avenida (23rd Street Trafficway)
-East on Cesar E. Chavez Avenida to Southwest Boulevard
-Northeast on Southwest Boulevard to Broadway Boulevard
-North on Broadway Boulevard back to 12th Street

The 12th Street Bridge is currently in the third and final phase of a construction project designed to refurbish the structure. The work, being managed by the City’s Capital Improvements Management Office, began in 2004 and is estimated to be complete by fall of 2010.
