Residents invited to recycle at A.B.O.P.T. Collection Event

City of Kansas City, Mo., residents have an opportunity to safely and sustainably recycle their household hazardous waste, unwanted confidential documents, leaves, brush and other unwanted items at the A.B.O.P.T (Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil, Paint and Tire) Collection Event this Saturday, May 21 from 8 a.m. to noon.

A.B.O.P.T takes place at 701 N.W. Barry Road (behind Best Buy, across the street from the Metro North Mall). To access the event, residents must enter at the intersection of Northwest 82nd Street and North Broadway Avenue.

The City will be on hand to collect and safely dispose antifreeze; car and household batteries; oil (automotive, cooking, heating, etc.); paint; paint-related chemicals, such as strippers, thinners and varnishes; and tires.

Residents may bring their unwanted confidential documents to the onsite Proshred Mobile Shredding Truck for secure shredding and disposal. Proshred will accept all types of paper, including those with staples, paper clips, three ring binders, spiral notebooks and most office materials. Residents can watch their materials be shredded to make certain their secure disposal. All materials shredded will be recycled.

A leaf and brush dumpster will be onsite for residents to dispose their leaves, yard waste, brush and tree trimmings. All items must be in paper bags, not plastic. The leaf and bush drop-off is offered only for residents of Kansas City, Mo., so proof of residence will be required for this service.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City will have a truck available for donations. They will accept: clothing, shoes, household linens, sheets, toys, books, jewelry, electronics and furniture in usable condition.

They will not accept: used computer equipment, major appliances, swing sets, cribs, mattresses, box springs, heavy equipment, tires, paint, chemicals and food.

Heartland Habitat for Humanity will also be present to collect clean large appliances in good working order. They will also take lumber; doors; replacement windows; plumbing fixtures; hardware; cabinets; landscaping material; brick; roofing material; new paint and stain; working and non-rusted hot water heaters and furnaces; tire; wood flooring; trim; and tools.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., has partnered with Northland Neighborhoods, Inc.; MD Management; Metro North Square; and the Metro North Mall to sponsor the A.B.O.P.T Collection Event.

If unable to make this event, there will be another A.B.O.P.T Collection Cleanup on July 30 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose FOCUS Center, 3200 Wayne Ave. This event replaces an A.B.O.P.T. event originally scheduled for June 4 at the Deramus Recycling Center.
