Community Resource Fair
The City of Kansas City, Mo. is sponsoring a free community wide resource fair on Saturday, May 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Sprint Center, 1407 Grand Blvd. Fair attendees will be provided with a free pass to the College Basketball Experience (valid only during the fair). The fair provides an opportunity for residents to register for day camps, in addition to learning about numerous resources pertaining to summer and year round community programs.
This fair is a result of conversations from multiple focus groups held over the past month, where young people and organizational leaders expressed the need for information about organizations that provide camps, clinics, education, art and leadership programs, tutoring and more.
Community organizations that want to participate in the fair may register online at www.kcmo.org/engagekc. The deadline for community organization registration is Thursday, May 20.
“I am deeply concerned about the lack of summer school options, and encourage students, parents and guardians to attend the fair and seek solutions to engage our young people this summer,” said Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks. “Nearly, 10,000 young people who traditionally attend summer school will not be offered this option due to state budget reductions.”
The Office of Civic and Community Engagement (a division of the City Manager’s Office) is working towards measures to expand summer school and/or enrichment program options by leveraging partnerships with companies such as Worlds of Fun, Parks and Recreation - free swim program, the College Basketball Experience, Penn Valley Community College, Kansas City Royals and others.
Free parking will be provided at the KC Live! garage, located at 13th Street and Grand Blvd.
