FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 18, 2012

City to conduct full-scale emergency exercise in preparation for All-Star Game

The City of Kansas City Mo., Office of Emergency Management in cooperation with the Kansas City Royals and the Regional Homeland Security Coordinating Committee will conduct a full-scale exercise on April 25, as part of preparations for a safe and successful All-Star Game week of events. The City of Kansas City, Mo., will host Major League Baseball’s 83rd All-Star Game this July. The exercise is part of a planning and preparation process that the City started last fall.

The five-hour interagency exercise will take place at Kauffman Stadium and the City’s Emergency Operations Center. The exercise will demonstrate and assess levels of communications, coordination and capabilities among all partner agencies and stake holders. The focus will be on assessing plans, policies and procedures.

“The City is committed to providing the best possible All-Star experience for visitors this summer, and part of that is making certain that we take the necessary steps to ensure public safety,” said City Manager Troy Schulte. “This exercise is just one of many steps in the process.”

Exercise participants include staff from the City Manager’s Office; the Kansas City, Mo., Police, Fire and Health departments; the Kansas City Royals and regional and federal agencies.Additionally, representatives from local media will also be participating in an effort to help assess public information components of the plan.

“A major role of the Office of Emergency Management is to facilitate interagency cooperation during an emergency incident,” said Emergency Manager Gene Shepherd. “The interagency cooperation and planning that I have witnessed over the past six to eight months is an example of the high level of professionalism that exists in public safety agencies across the region.”

Media inquiries about the exercise should be directed to Gene Shepherd, Office of Emergency Management, at 816-513-8640 or Dennis Gagnon, City Communications Office, at 816-513-2659.
