News from City Hall
City Communications Office
City of Kansas City, Mo.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 5, 2012
Reminder: City earnings tax deadline is April 17
City of Kansas City, Mo.,
taxpayers are reminded that wage earning residents have until Tuesday, April 17 to file their 2011 earnings tax returns and pay any tax due. This deadline also applies to the profit earnings tax for those businesses that are on a calendar year accounting cycle.
The City is following the Internal Revenue Service filing deadline, which is extended this year because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls this year on Monday, April 16.
Wage earners can utilize the City’s free online system, which can be accessed at www.kcmo.org/wage. Taxpayers currently in the Revenue Division’s taxpayer database were mailed a postcard with instructions on using the online system. Returns received electronically, including refund requests, can be processed more quickly and accurately. Taxpayers preferring to mail in tax returns can download forms online at www.kcmo.org/finance.
Taxpayers needing additional time to file their earnings tax return may file an extension with the City using Form RD-111 for the Profits Earnings tax and Form RD-112 for the Wage Earners Earnings Tax. Requests for extensions must be mailed to the Revenue Division at 414 E 12th St., Kansas City, MO 64106. Extension payments are also due April 17, 2012 and must be 90 percent of the tax due to avoid penalty and interest.
