City to participate in Earth Hour March 27

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will participate in Earth Hour, which includes turning off the roof lights on City Hall from 8:30-9:30 p.m. on March 27. The efforts are in coordination with the Show Me Your Solutions Campaign, which works to show how everyone can make a difference in preventing climate change.

City Councilwoman Jan Marcason, 4th District

Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. The Show Me Your Solutions Campaign is designed to show Missourians how they can help prevent climate change by taking action at the local level. We will also challenge policymakers, including members of Congress, to show us their solutions to climate change.

Urging the City of Kansas City, Missouri, other area municipalities, public and private businesses and individuals to support “Earth Hour 2010” by turning off their lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm on Saturday, March 27, 2010.

“Along with nearly other 400 cities, we hope that Saturday, March 27, from 8:30 – 9 :30 p.m., that we will turn out all our lights and send a clear message that we want to turn out the lights on dirty air, dangerous dependency on foreign oil and costly climate change impacts. And make the switch to cleaner air, a stronger economic future and a more secure nation.

“The concept is that all lights will go off and it will send a symbolic message in a show of universal solidarity.”
