Director of Public Works Department retires
George “Ed” Wolf Jr., Director of the Public Works Department and Assistant City Manager, will retire effective Jan. 31.
Wolf worked for the City and Public Works Department for 35 years. He served as Assistant City Engineer and Deputy Director of the Public Works Department prior to being appointed Director in 1994. Wolf was appointed Assistant City Manager in 1996.
Wolf was the City’s project manager on construction of the Block 90 Public Parking Garage; the Vista International Hotel (currently the Marriott Hotel); and the renovation of the Auditorium Plaza Garage and Barney Allis Plaza. He also served as interim Director of the Convention and Entertainment Centers Department.
While he was Deputy Director, and then Director, Wolf led the department in doubling the size of Bartle Hall through expansion across eight lanes of Interstate 35. Other highlights of Wolf’s career include purchasing two separate streetlight utilities and upgrading and expanding the City’s streetlight system to 80,000 lights.
He was recognized by the American Public Works Association as one of its Top Ten Public Works Leaders of 1999 and served as chairman of APWA’s 2002 International Congress and Equipment Exposition held at Bartle Hall.
