Long-Term Solid Waste Strategic Management Plan
Kansas City's Public Works Department is evaluating its current solid waste management process and is developing a Long-Term Solid Waste Strategic Management Plan.
Holiday schedule
If a holiday falls during the week, trash and recycling collection takes place on the day following the holiday, and collection for the remaining days of the week also takes place one day later than usual. Friday trash is collected on Saturday during such weeks.
The City's Solid Waste Division observes the following holidays in 2010:
- New Year's Day - Jan. 1
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Jan. 18
- Presidents Day - Feb. 15
- Memorial Day - May 31
- Independence Day - July 4 (July 12 through July 16 is a "no tag" period for trash collection in the City. Residents may set out more than two bags of trash without tags.)
- Labor Day - Sept. 6
- Veterans Day - Nov. 11
- Thanksgiving Day - Nov. 25
- Christmas Day - Dec. 25 (Dec. 27 through Dec. 31 is a "no tag" period for trash collection in the City. Residents may set out more than two bags of trash without tags.)
The City of Kansas City provides one of the most cost-effective trash and recycling collection services in the nation. The service cost is approximately $7 per household per month less than the national average. Residents are not charged a monthly fee for trash collection service. The service is funded from general tax dollars.
Residents are advised that the cost of trash disposal is likely to rise in the future as landfill fees and other costs increase. By diverting recyclable materials away from the landfill through the
KC Recycles program, residents can help control unecessary increases in landfill disposal costs .
