Sharon Sanders Brooks represents the 3rd District on the City of Kansas City, Mo., City Council.

Councilwoman Sanders Brooks is a historical consultant and is frequently a speaker on historical topics for organizations around the region. Formerly a civil rights investigator addressing employment and fair housing discrimination complaints in Kansas City, Sanders Brooks is well versed in the challenges that face the basic structures of communities.

Sanders Brooks lives in Kansas City, Mo., but is originally from Washington, D.C. During her spare time, Sanders Brooks enjoys collecting African-American memorabilia, reading, traveling and volunteering at the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. She is a member of the St. James United Methodist Church.

About the 3rd District
The 3rd Council District is approximately 21 square miles, or 13,440 acres, which constitutes about 6 percent of the land area of the City. Based on the 2000 Census report, the 3rd District has an estimated population of about 74,000, however trends show that to be on the decline, although the decline in population has stabilized in recent years.

3rd District boundaries
The 3rd District is bounded by Troost Avenue on the west and Independence Avenue on the north. The southern boundary is East 46th Street from Troost Avenue to Paseo Boulevard and East 45th Street from Paseo Boulevard to Cleaver II Boulevard where it turns into East Coal Mine Road. From that location, the boundary goes along Winchester Avenue to the north side of I-70 and east to the Independence city limits. The eastern boundary is the city limit between Kansas City and Independence.
