John A. Sharp has been elected in 1983, 1987, 2007 and 2011 to the 6th District seat on the City of Kansas City, Mo., City Council, which covers south and southwestern Kansas City. He has been appointed to the Legislative; Finance, Governance & Ethics; and Public Safety and Emergency Services Committees of the City Council.

John previously served five terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, representing the Ruskin/Hickman Mills area, and two terms on the Hickman Mills Board of Education.


John has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kansas with a double major in political science and journalism and a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with an emphasis in urban administration. He retired in 2003 as Executive Director of MAST (Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust) after serving 12 years in that position.

A homeowner in the Avalon View neighborhood and 45-year resident of South Kansas City, John has a son, Mark Sharp, who is a graduate of Hickman Mills High School and Clark Atlanta University. His stepdaughter, Candice Richie, a graduate of Hickman Mills High School, is deceased.

John is Vice President of the Multiracial Family Circle, a Board Member of the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, and a former Board Member of the Ruskin Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation and the Urban League of Greater Kansas City. He is a Founding Sponsor of the Martin Luther King Jr., National Memorial Foundation and a Charter Member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He is active in a host of civic and community organizations and is a deacon at Community Christian Church.
