2000 employment in district by industry
Of all employed residents age 16 or older in the 1st District, 40 percent are employed in the "service" sector, which is a 10 percent increase over the last decade. This sector accounts for the largest percentage of all workers employed in the city, about 60 percent.

Portion of district residents who work in the 1st District
Of the people who lived in the 1st District north of the river in 1990, 16 percent worked in that area. Similarly, 12 percent of the people who lived in the 1st District south of the river also worked there, the smallest of any area.

Portion of district workers who live in the district
In 1990, the proportion of workers who also lived in the 1st District south of the river was one of the lowest in the city. However, in the 1st District north of the river, the proportion was one of the highest in the city.

Where district workers live
In 1990, 25 percent of the district workers south of the river lived in Jackson County outside Kansas City, while the highest percentage, 31 percent lived inside Kansas City in Jackson County. In 1990, two-thirds of the 1st District workers north of the river also lived north of the river, while about one-quarter lived south of the river. The interstate system provides for easy commutes to the employment centers in the district for people living outside of the city limits.

2000 transportation to work
A similar percentage of people in the 1st District drive to work as in other areas of the city. Similarly, the percentages of 1st District workers using other modes of transportation are about the same as in the city as a whole. Within the district, a much higher percentage of people south of the river used public transit or walked to work than north.

2000 unemployment
The unemployment rate in the 1st District was slightly higher than the 2nd, 4th and 6th districts, and was exactly the same as the overall citywide average. Generally, unemployment has increased nationally and locally.
