Nonprofits no longer exempt from convention tax beginning Oct. 1
On April 2, 2013, Kansas City, Mo., residents voted to remove all existing exemptions from payment of the convention and tourism tax on guests, with the exception of the exemption held by the United States government. The amendment, Section 68-564 of the City’s Code of Ordinances, goes into effect on Oct. 1.
For hotel and motel stays on or after this date, nonprofit organizations, schools, churches and state agencies will no longer be exempt from the convention and tourism tax, which is set at 7.5 percent. Any taxable sales or charges to these guests shall be included in gross receipts subject to tax.
